Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s batting coach for the T20 World Cup 2026 on a consultancy basis, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Thursday. The 56-year-old will assume charge on January 18, 2026, and will remain with the team until March 10, providing crucial support as the island nation prepares to co-host the global tournament with India.
Rathour brings wealth of international experience
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of former India Batting Coach Vikram Rathour as the Batting Coach of the Sri Lanka National Team. He has been appointed on a consultancy basis, with a primary focus on the team’s preparation for the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2026,” Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.
Rathour is a former India international who represented the country in six Tests and seven ODIs during his playing career. The right-handed batsman was known for his solid technique and temperament during his time as a player.
Successful tenure as India batting coach
The 56-year-old served as the India batting coach from September 2019 to July 2024, a period during which India achieved several significant milestones. Under his guidance, India’s batting lineup flourished across formats, with players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill all making significant strides.
Rathour is a BCCI Level 3 coach, the highest coaching certification awarded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, reflecting his deep understanding of the game and coaching methodology.
Current role with Rajasthan Royals
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rathour is currently part of Rajasthan Royals’ support staff, where he has been working with some of the world’s best T20 players. His experience in the IPL will be particularly valuable for Sri Lanka as they prepare for the T20 World Cup.
Perfect timing for Sri Lanka
The appointment comes at a crucial time for Sri Lanka, who will co-host the T20 World Cup beginning February 7, 2026, with India. As co-hosts, there will be immense pressure on the Sri Lankan team to perform well in front of their home crowds.
Rathour’s experience of working under high-pressure situations with the Indian team, combined with his technical expertise and understanding of modern T20 cricket, makes him an ideal choice to help Sri Lanka’s batsmen prepare for the global event.
His tenure from January 18 to March 10 covers the entire tournament period, ensuring continuity and focused preparation for Sri Lanka’s batting unit throughout the World Cup campaign.
