Two stories dominated the buildup to CSK vs KKR at Chepauk on Monday evening — one involving a Zimbabwean pacer making a calculated gamble with his franchise career, and one involving a 44-year-old icon who still has not faced a bowler in the nets with full intensity.

Muzarabani’s Gamble — and the Price It Carries

The sequence of events that led to Blessing Muzarabani’s two-year PSL ban is a story of opportunism meeting consequence.

At the IPL 2026 auction in December 2025, Muzarabani went unsold. He then registered for the PSL auction and was not picked in the main draft either. Islamabad United subsequently signed him as a replacement player, giving the 6-foot-7 Zimbabwe express pacer a contract and a slot in their squad for PSL 2026 — which is running simultaneously with the IPL this season.

That was when KKR came calling. KKR had terminated the contract of Mustafizur Rahman amid the ongoing political tensions between India and Bangladesh. They needed a replacement, and Muzarabani — tall, rapid, capable of hitting 145 kmph consistently — was the name they wanted.

Muzarabani informed Islamabad United of his decision to withdraw, signed with KKR, and flew to India. The PSL did not let it pass.

On Tuesday, April 14, the PCB announced a formal two-year ban — barring Muzarabani from the next two editions of the PSL. The language of the ruling was unambiguous.

“In this instance, despite a clear offer and an unequivocal acceptance of essential terms, the player chose to disregard these obligations in favour of a conflicting arrangement.”

“Professionalism in franchise-based leagues requires participants to act with transparency and consistency. Entering into a conflicting engagement while a prior binding agreement subsists represents a departure from the expected standards of the game. Such conduct, if left unaddressed, erodes the reliability of dealings and the confidence that franchises, regulators, and stakeholders place in professional engagements.”

“The two-year ban reflects the gravity of the breach.”

This is not the first time the PSL has taken this stance. South Africa’s Corbin Bosch received a one-year ban in IPL 2025 for a comparable situation. This year, Dasun Shanaka and Spencer Johnson have also withdrawn from PSL contracts to participate in the IPL, and their cases are expected to be addressed by the PCB in similar fashion.

What Muzarabani Has Given KKR in Return

From KKR’s perspective, the gamble has already paid back handsomely — at least in one match.

Muzarabani was wicketless in his debut against LSG. Against SRH in Match 19, however, he delivered the kind of spell that reminded everyone why KKR made the call — 4/41, taking wickets at crucial phases of the game with his raw pace and ability to generate steep bounce.

KKR came into this season without most of their bowling attack from their back-to-back title campaigns in 2024 and 2025 — Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy both injured. Muzarabani has given Ajinkya Rahane a genuine pace option in the middle and death overs who can change a game in four overs.

Dhoni’s Chepauk Return — Still Nowhere In Sight

The parallel story in Chennai has a quieter, more painful quality.

MS Dhoni appeared in the Chepauk nets ahead of the KKR clash — batting against throwdowns from Michael Hussey — but ESPNcricinfo confirmed that the 44-year-old has not yet batted full tilt, not faced live bowling, and has not practised wicketkeeping at all. He has not travelled with the team to a single match venue this season — neither for away games at Guwahati and Bengaluru, nor for home fixtures at Chepauk itself.

CSK’s two-week projection from March 28 — the earliest date by which Dhoni could return — has now expired. The prognosis for the KKR match on Monday evening, based on available information, pointed against his participation.
