Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody has highlighted what he calls a “wonderful problem” in Indian cricket: too much talent. While acknowledging that an abundance of quality players is an enviable position, Moody pointed out that it creates a selection nightmare for captains and selectors tasked with choosing the best XI from a deep pool of world-class options.

“Too much talent—a wonderful problem, but a nightmare for selectors”

Speaking on Jio Hotstar, Moody explained the unique challenge facing Indian cricket as it prepares for major tournaments like the 2026 T20 World Cup.

“One of the issues with Indian cricket is that there is too much talent. There are simply too many options. It’s a wonderful problem to have, but it becomes a nightmare for a selector or a captain,” Moody said.

India’s squad depth has been on full display in recent years, with fierce competition for places across all formats. In the T20I setup, multiple openers, middle-order batters, all-rounders, and spinners are vying for limited spots, making team selection an intricate balancing act.

Eoin Morgan: Bowling attacks win tournaments

England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan also weighed in, emphasizing the importance of strong bowling attacks in white-ball cricket—particularly the ability to defend low scores, which builds unshakeable belief within a team.

“In white-ball cricket, bowling attacks win you tournaments. When you can defend low scores, it creates a belief within the team that you can win a game from anywhere. That belief becomes a big threat for any team in a World Cup,” Morgan said.

Morgan’s comments are particularly relevant given India’s bowling depth heading into the T20 World Cup. With Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar in the squad, India boasts one of the most well-rounded and versatile bowling attacks in world cricket.

India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad

The BCCI recently announced India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, with Suryakumar Yadav set to lead the side in his first ICC tournament as captain. Axar Patel has been named vice-captain.

The squad showcases India’s embarrassment of riches:

Openers: Fiery left-hander Abhishek Sharma (strike rate of 188.02 in T20Is) is expected to open alongside Sanju Samson. Ishan Kishan, who last played a T20I in 2023, returns as backup opener and wicketkeeper.

Middle Order: Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Rinku Singh provide firepower, depth, and flexibility in the middle order, offering a blend of power-hitting and all-round abilities.

Bowling Attack: Jasprit Bumrah leads a potent pace attack featuring Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. Kuldeep Yadav is the specialist wrist-spinner, while Varun Chakravarthy adds mystery spin, and the spin all-rounders offer additional options.

T20 World Cup campaign begins February 7
