Toe on the Rope, Eyes Off the Angles: The Finn Allen Dismissal That Has IPL Umpiring Under Fire Again
The umpiring controversy surrounding Finn Allen’s dismissal in the KKR vs LSG IPL 2026 clash at Eden Gardens on Thursday is the latest in a growing list of officiating flashpoints in the 2026 season — and this one has left commentators, former players and fans united in their frustration.
What Happened in Over Two
Prince Yadav — a 21-year-old left-arm pacer from Bihar playing only his second IPL game — had Finn Allen in trouble from ball one. Mohammed Shami had already beaten the New Zealand opener three times in the first over with outswing and inswing, and Allen was clearly uncomfortable. In the second over, Prince angled one into Allen’s body, drawing a thick top-edge that flew high and deep towards third man..
Digvesh Rathi — the young LSG leg-spinner who had forced his way into the side with his domestic form — ran hard to his left, got underneath it and completed what looked, from one angle, like a clean catch near the rope. The on-field umpire raised his finger immediately.
The problem was in the angles that the broadcast showed immediately after. Replays — specifically one frame showing the advertising board at the boundary — appeared to show Rathi’s left foot making contact with either the boundary rope or the edge of the advertising hoarding while completing the catch.
Under the Laws of Cricket, if a fielder has any contact with the boundary — whether by foot, shoe, or any part of the body — before completing a catch, it is a six.
The third umpire, KN Anantha Padmanabhan, checked the replay but ruled Allen out.
“That Looked Like a Six” — Goswami, Bhogle, Du Plessis All Agree
The reaction from the commentary box and from former players on social media was immediate and pointed.
Former RCB wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami was unequivocal on X.
“That looked like a six, isn’t it? Clearly the foot touched the advertising board and you could see it moving.”
Commentators Harsha Bhogle and Faf du Plessis in the broadcast commentary also raised doubts. Bhogle noted there appeared to be contact visible on the lettering of the advertising board.
“I felt that there was a little crease there on the letters O and O.”
Both commentators agreed the umpire should have checked multiple camera angles before giving his verdict.
A Clear Breakdown in Process
The most damning aspect of this controversy is not just the decision — it is the process.
Replays clearly showed Rathi’s left foot had made contact with the boundary rope. The third umpire reviewed the footage but ruled Allen out regardless, without apparently consulting the angle that most clearly showed the contact. Neither Ajinkya Rahane at the non-striker’s end nor Allen himself pushed back, having seemingly not seen the replay.
The question being widely asked is: whose responsibility is it to ensure all relevant angles are reviewed? The answer under IPL rules is unambiguous — it is the third umpire’s duty to check sufficient evidence before upholding or overturning a decision. In this case, that duty appears not to have been discharged.
This is not the first umpiring controversy of IPL 2026 — earlier in the season, a controversial catch decision in the SRH vs PBKS match also drew widespread criticism.
KKR’s Miserable Season Gets No Favours
For KKR, the timing of the controversy could not have been worse. They had come into Match 15 without a win from three completed games, sitting ninth in the table with an NRR of -1.964. Their bowling has been the tournament’s worst — spin economy of 11.07 and seam economy of 10.83, both the weakest figures in IPL 2026.
Finn Allen had been signed as one of the premium overseas batting assets — bought on the back of a T20 World Cup semi-final century of 33 balls against South Africa. But he has managed 37, 28, 6 and now 9 across his four innings, and the controversial dismissal only added to the frustration around his and KKR’s start to the season.
