South Africa T20 World Cup squad: Tristan Stubbs snubbed as seven from 2024 final retained
South Africa has announced its provisional 15-member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, with hard-hitting middle-order batter Tristan Stubbs among the biggest names to miss out on selection. The Proteas, led by Aiden Markram, have retained seven players from the 2024 T20 World Cup final, where they lost to India in a heartbreaking finish, while also introducing several exciting new faces.
Seven survivors from the 2024 final
South Africa has kept faith with the core group that reached the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Barbados. The seven players retained from that fateful match are:
Aiden Markram (captain)
Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper)
Kagiso Rabada (pace bowler)
Marco Jansen (left-arm seamer and all-rounder)
Anrich Nortje (pace bowler)
David Miller (middle-order power-hitter)
Keshav Maharaj (left-arm spinner)
These players bring experience, leadership, and match-winning ability, and will be determined to go one step further in 2026 after coming agonizingly close to glory in 2024.
Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton snubbed
The biggest shock in the squad is the exclusion of Tristan Stubbs, who has been one of South Africa’s most explosive middle-order batters in recent times. The 23-year-old has impressed with his power-hitting and versatility, but the selectors have opted for a different combination.
Another notable omission is Ryan Rickelton, who has shown promise in white-ball cricket but has been left out in favor of other batting options.
New faces in the squad
The squad features several exciting new entrants who have earned their spots through impressive domestic and franchise cricket performances:
Dewald Brevis: The young batting sensation, known as “Baby AB” for his resemblance to AB de Villiers’ strokeplay, brings flair and aggression.
Kwena Maphaka: The highly-rated teenage pacer has been fast-tracked into the squad after standout performances in domestic cricket.
Corbin Bosch: The seam-bowling all-rounder adds depth and balance to the squad.
Tony de Zorzi, Jason Smith, and Donovan Ferreira: All three batters have been rewarded for their strong showings in the domestic T20 Challenge and the ongoing SA20.
George Linde: The left-arm spinner returns to the national setup, providing a second spin option alongside Maharaj.
Lungi Ngidi: The experienced fast bowler returns to the squad after recovering from injuries.
South Africa’s T20 World Cup campaign
South Africa has been drawn in Group D alongside Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates. The Proteas will begin their campaign against Canada in Ahmedabad on February 9, aiming to make a strong start in their quest to finally lift an ICC trophy.
