Ryan Rickelton’s brilliant maiden SA20 century went in vain as MI Cape Town fell 15 runs short of Durban’s Super Giants’ mammoth 232/5 in a pulsating SA20 Season 4 opener at Newlands. Despite the South African opener’s heroic 113 off 65 balls, the defending champions couldn’t overhaul the tournament’s highest-ever total on a record-breaking night that saw 449 runs and 25 sixes.

DSG post record SA20 total

Durban’s Super Giants blazed their way to 232/5, eclipsing Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s 204/3 from the Season 2 final at the same venue. The innings was built on a flying start from New Zealand’s opening pair, Devon Conway and Kane Williamson, who raced to 96 in just 8.3 overs during the powerplay.

Conway smashed 64 off 33 balls (seven fours, two sixes) before falling to Trent Boult, while Williamson made 40 off 25 balls before being brilliantly caught by MI Cape Town captain Rashid Khan, who sprinted back from mid-off and dived full length to complete a stunning catch.

The middle order maintained the onslaught. England’s Jos Buttler (20 off 12) and South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen (22 off 14) kept boundaries flowing before captain Aiden Markram took over, blasting 35 off 17 balls (five fours, one six). Evan Jones provided the late flourish with an unbeaten 33 off 14 balls (four fours, two sixes), ensuring DSG posted the highest score in SA20 history.

Rickelton’s century brings MI Cape Town close

Chasing 233, MI Cape Town were anchored by Ryan Rickelton, who continued his love affair with Newlands. The left-handed opener cut, drove, and pulled powerfully despite early setbacks, with Rassie van der Dussen (2) and Reeza Hendricks departing cheaply.

The innings gained momentum when debutant Jason Smith smashed an explosive 41 off just 14 balls (four fours, three sixes), swinging the chase back in MI Cape Town’s favour. However, DSG struck back in the death overs, dismissing Smith, Nicholas Pooran (15), and Dwaine Pretorius (5) to regain control.

Rickelton was handed a lifeline on 85 when Kwena Maphaka overstepped, causing the opener to be recalled after being caught in the deep. The reprieve allowed Rickelton to bring up his second career T20 century, but with 22 runs needed off the final over, DSG seamer Eathan Bosch (4/46) held his nerve to dismiss the left-hander and seal a thrilling 15-run victory for the visitors.

Record-breaking opening night

The match produced a cumulative 449 runs, featuring 25 sixes and 40 boundaries—a fitting start to SA20 Season 4 that had the Newlands crowd on their feet throughout. The boundary count and scoring rate underlined the aggressive brand of cricket that has made the SA20 one of the most entertaining T20 leagues globally.

Despite the defeat, Rickelton’s century announced his intentions for the season, while DSG’s record total sent a warning to the rest of the competition that they mean business in their title defence.
