India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has revealed that captain Rohit Sharma told him about his Test debut 15 days in advance—an unusual move designed to give the young left-hander ample time to prepare mentally and physically for the biggest moment of his career. The early heads-up paid off handsomely as Jaiswal marked his debut with a sensational 171 against West Indies in Roseau, Dominica, in July 2023.

Rohit’s unique approach to debut preparation

Speaking recently, Jaiswal recalled the special conversation with Rohit that set the tone for his international career. The then-India captain didn’t wait until the last moment to inform the 21-year-old about his selection—instead, he gave him two weeks to get ready.

“Almost fifteen days before, he had already told me,” Jaiswal said, as quoted by India Today. “He said, ‘I won’t tell you just one day before that you’re playing. I’m telling you fifteen days in advance—you’re going to play. Prepare yourself. We’ll prepare together, and we’ll do it properly.’ That was his thought process.”

Rohit’s reasoning was clear: he wanted Jaiswal to walk onto the field for his maiden Test match fully prepared, both technically and mentally, rather than dealing with last-minute nerves or uncertainty.

“The moment I found out that I was going to make my debut, it was a very special moment for me. I had never played for India before, and this was my first time,” Jaiswal added.

Rohit’s advice: Play freely, but make it big

Beyond just informing him early, Rohit also had crucial advice for the young opener about his approach to batting at the international level.

“He spoke to me really well. He said a lot of things that gave me a lot of confidence. He kept telling me, ‘You’re free—go out there, play freely, play your shots with confidence. But try that if you get set, then make it a big innings.’ So there were many such conversations,” Jaiswal recalled.

That message resonated perfectly with Jaiswal’s natural attacking style, and he executed it to perfection in his debut innings. His 171 was a masterclass in patience, shot selection, and converting a good start into a match-defining knock—exactly what Rohit had advised.

A dream debut in the Caribbean

Jaiswal’s Test debut at Windsor Park in Roseau was nothing short of spectacular. At just 21 years old, he became only the third Indian to score a century on Test debut away from home and showed remarkable composure against a West Indies attack that included seasoned bowlers like Kemar Roach and Jason Holder.

His innings featured an array of crisp drives, powerful pulls, and solid defense, proving he belonged at the highest level. The knock laid the foundation for India’s commanding first-innings total and set the tone for what has become a highly successful Test career so far.

In 28 Tests since that debut, Jaiswal has amassed 2,511 runs at an average of 49.23, including multiple centuries and a reputation as one of the most fearless young openers in world cricket.

Gratitude for Rohit’s mentorship

Jaiswal didn’t hold back in expressing his admiration and gratitude for Rohit Sharma, calling him a mentor, elder brother, and inspiration.

“What can I even say about Rohit bhai? I honestly don’t have words for him. What a person he is. What a guy. He’s like an elder brother—he teaches you, he inspires you,” Jaiswal said.

“It’s a dream for so many people to play alongside Rohit bhai, Virat paaji, Hardik bhai,” he added, acknowledging the privilege of sharing the dressing room with some of India’s biggest stars.

Rohit’s leadership style—marked by empathy, clear communication, and a genuine investment in young players—has been widely praised, and Jaiswal’s story is a perfect example of how that approach can unlock a player’s potential.
