Ravichandran Ashwin has given a very emotional and honest explanation for Ishan Kishan’s return to India’s T20 World Cup squad. He called the recall a “gift” from cricket and said Ishan earned it because of his attitude when he was away from the national team. The wicketkeeper-batter comes back after a brilliant domestic season and joins a Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian side that will aim for another world title.

Ashwin on why Ishan deserved this “gift”

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin praised Ishan’s journey back into the Indian team. He said,

“This is a gift that cricket has given to Ishan Kishan. Many people from outside can guess what it is, and some may say it’s unfair. But life comes back in circles. The reason Ishan was not in the team earlier, and how he has come back now, has only one reason. He has given cricket the respect it deserves.”

Ashwin stressed that what impressed him most was not just Ishan’s runs, but the way he handled his time out of the side. In his words, Ishan “went through the yards of the game, respected the game, and hence succeeded.” That respect, Ashwin believes, is what has brought Ishan back to the biggest stage.

Ishan Kishan’s stunning SMAT season

Ishan’s recall is mainly built on a dream Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26 season for Jharkhand. He led them to their first-ever SMAT title and finished as the tournament’s top run-scorer. In 10 innings, he scored 517 runs at an average of 57.44 and a strike rate of over 197, hitting two centuries. One of those hundreds came in the high-pressure final against Haryana, showing his big-match temperament.

These numbers made his case impossible to ignore. They also showed that he is ready to play the high-impact role India need from a modern T20 wicketkeeper-batter.

Hard work in domestic and first-class cricket

Ashwin made it clear that Ishan did not just wait for a recall. He pointed out how Ishan chose to play every possible game to prove himself again.

Ashwin said,

“He played in the Buchi Babu Trophy. A player like Ishan Kishan came and represented Jharkhand in the tournament held in Chennai. He was the number one performer in Ranji Trophy preparations… he went through the yards of the game, respected the game, and hence succeeded.”

By mentioning Buchi Babu Trophy and Ranji preparations, Ashwin underlined that Ishan went back to the basics—red-ball work, domestic grind, and tough conditions. For Ashwin, this showed that Ishan was willing to restart from the bottom and that is exactly the kind of mindset the game rewards.

India’s T20 World Cup squad and group

Suryakumar Yadav will lead India’s 15-man squad at the T20 World Cup, with Axar Patel named vice-captain. Shubman Gill has been dropped due to issues with form and fitness, which opens up more flexibility in the batting line-up. Ishan comes in as the second wicketkeeper-batter, giving India an aggressive left-handed option at the top or in the middle order.

India are placed in Group A along with Pakistan, USA, Namibia and the Netherlands. Their campaign begins against the USA on February 7 in Mumbai. With Ishan in top form and hungry to prove himself again, and with Ashwin’s strong backing of his work ethic, India will hope this selection pays off on the world stage.
