Rashid Khan says MI Cape Town face less pressure defending SA20 title than winning it
MI Cape Town captain Rashid Khan believes his team faces less pressure heading into SA20 Season 4 compared to last year, when they broke a two-year drought to claim their first title. Speaking ahead of the defending champions’ opening match against Durban’s Super Giants on Friday at Newlands, Rashid credited collective team effort for their turnaround from finishing bottom twice in a row to lifting the trophy in Season 3. The Afghan spinner is confident his experienced squad, bolstered by new recruit Nicholas Pooran, can handle the challenges of defending their crown.
Less pressure after ending bottom-place finishes
Rashid explained that the weight of expectation was much heavier last season when MI Cape Town had to prove they could bounce back from consecutive last-place finishes in the first two editions of SA20. Now, as defending champions, the mindset is different. He said,
“There was more pressure last year than this year, you know we came at the bottom twice in a row and to come up from that and win the trophy was a big thing for us as a team. I think what we did right was we played collectively as a team and we took the responsibility at certain points of the game.”
The captain backed his experienced squad to adjust quickly to conditions and team requirements. He added,
“Every player is well experienced, and they will adjust themselves with the condition and the position of the team quite quickly. Everyone is so professional, they have played so much cricket around the world, and I think it won’t be that difficult for them to acclimatise.”
Nicholas Pooran to bring “energy and entertainment”
MI Cape Town have added destructive West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran to their squad for this season, and Rashid is excited about what the left-hander will bring to the team. Known for his explosive batting and ability to clear boundaries at will, Pooran joins a star-studded line-up that includes South African pace bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Corbin Bosch, wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton, and New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult.
Rashid said about Pooran,
“He is going to bring lots of energy to the game. We know how dangerous and how good a cricketer he is. He is a kind of a person who comes in smashing lots of sixes you will see. He’s a guy full of energy and entertainment and I am sure he is going to love his time here.”
Durban’s Super Giants bring star-studded squad
MI Cape Town’s opening opponent, Durban’s Super Giants, have undergone a major transformation under new captain Aiden Markram. The South African skipper has won the SA20 twice before with Sunrisers Eastern Cape and brings a winning mentality to the Lance Klusener-coached side.
DSG boast an impressive squad featuring England’s 2022 T20 World Cup-winning captain Jos Buttler, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, and former Proteas white-ball star Heinrich Klaasen. While West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine is unavailable initially, DSG have recruited South African Test spinner Simon Harmer to strengthen a spin attack that already includes Afghanistan mystery bowler Noor Ahmad.
Markram spoke about the challenge of building team identity with so many new faces. He said,
“There is a really nice balance in the setup, and we have a nice group of guys. We have some really good all-rounders, mixed with 2-3 world class players with the likes of Buttler, Klaasen and co. I think a lot of it comes down to finding our strength as a team and our identity and what gives us the best chance to play good cricket and win games of cricket, so it’s obviously a new and exciting challenge for us in a competition with a lot of new faces.”
SA20 Season 4 begins on Boxing Day
The fourth edition of SA20 begins on December 26 and runs through January 25, 2026, offering South African players crucial match practice ahead of the T20 World Cup in February. For defending champions MI Cape Town, the goal is clear: prove that last season’s title was no fluke and establish themselves as a consistent force in the competition. For DSG and Markram, it’s about finding the right combinations and chemistry to challenge for their first SA20 trophy under new leadership.
