Nitin Menon returns for 4th T20 World Cup as Anantha Padmanabhan earns ICC debut
Nitin Menon Set For 4th T20 World Cup, Anantha Padmanabhan To Debut In ICC Showpiece
Indian umpiring will have a strong presence at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with Nitin Menon returning for his fourth appearance at the event and Anantha Padmanabhan making his first-ever bow at an ICC global tournament. The competition, to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7, will feature a 30-member match officials panel, underlining just how seriously the ICC is treating standards on the field.
Indian umpires in the 2026 T20 World Cup
Nitin Menon, the only Indian currently on the ICC Elite Panel, continues to be the flag-bearer for Indian umpires on the world stage.
He has already stood in the 2021, 2022 and 2024 T20 World Cups and now returns for his fourth straight edition.
Menon was on-field for the first semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup between Afghanistan and South Africa, a game that showcased his calmness under pressure.
During the ongoing India–New Zealand T20I series, he is set to reach the landmark of 150 international matches across formats, the first Indian umpire ever to do so.
Joining him is KNA Anantha Padmanabhan, who will stand in his first ICC event after years of solid work on the domestic and international circuit. He has been named among the 24 on-field umpires for the group stage, making this a major breakthrough in his career. The third Indian, J Madanagopal, will officiate in his second T20 World Cup, having previously featured at the 2024 edition.
Opening assignments for Menon and Padmanabhan
The ICC has already mapped some high-profile early appointments.
On opening day in Kolkata, Menon and Australian umpire Sam Nogajski will be the on-field umpires for the Group C clash between Scotland and West Indies at Eden Gardens.
Padmanabhan is part of the wider group-stage panel and is expected to stand in multiple fixtures across India and Sri Lanka, giving him an ideal platform to settle into ICC event umpiring.

Landmark games and milestones for senior officials
Alongside the Indian contingent, several senior umpires and referees are poised to hit major milestones during this World Cup.
The curtain-raiser between Pakistan and the Netherlands in Colombo on February 7 will be umpired on-field by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Dharmasena and New Zealand’s Wayne Knights.
Dharmasena, a member of Sri Lanka’s 1996 ODI World Cup–winning side, has already stood in 37 T20 World Cup matches, including the 2016 and 2022 finals, placing him fourth on the all-time list.
For Knights, this will be his first T20 World Cup, and he is set to complete 50 T20Is as an on-field umpire in a Group A game in Colombo.
Australian umpire Rod Tucker currently leads the way for most matches officiated at T20 World Cups with 46 and is expected to bring up his 50th game during this edition. He will also stand in key fixtures including:
England vs Nepal
India vs Namibia
South Africa vs UAE.
Chris Gaffaney and Richard Illingworth, who were on-field together for the 2024 final, will link up again for the Australia vs Ireland Group B clash on February 11.
Illingworth and Dharmasena will take charge of one of the most anticipated group-stage fixtures: India vs Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.
