Former Australian captain Meg Lanning has been named captain of UP Warriorz ahead of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, which begins on January 9. The legendary Australian, who led Delhi Capitals to three consecutive WPL finals but finished runner-up each time, will now lead UP Warriorz as the franchise undergoes a fresh start following three disappointing seasons.

Lanning brings World Cup-winning pedigree to UP Warriorz

The Capri Sports-owned UP Warriorz announced Lanning’s appointment in a statement, emphasizing the franchise’s focus on experience and composure at the leadership level as they enter a new phase.

“As the UP Warriorz enters a new phase of their journey, Lanning’s appointment underscores the franchise’s focus on experience and composure at the leadership level,” the franchise said.

Lanning, who was signed by UP Warriorz for Rs 1.9 crore at the auction, is a seven-time World Cup winner, including two ODI titles and five T20 titles with Australia. Her vast experience at the highest level makes her one of the most decorated players in women’s cricket history.

UP Warriorz seek turnaround after disappointing seasons

UP Warriorz have undergone a significant overhaul ahead of this year’s WPL after finishing third in the inaugural edition in 2023, fourth in 2024, and fifth in 2025. The franchise is hoping Lanning’s leadership and winning mentality can help reverse their fortunes.

“As the WPL enters its fourth season, it’s been incredible to see how the league has evolved, the quality of cricket, the competitiveness, and the emergence of exciting new talent continue to raise the standard each year,” Lanning said.

“This is a talented group with a strong mix of international experience and Indian players, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead,” she added.

Abhishek Nayar praises Lanning’s leadership qualities

Former India player and UP Warriorz head coach Abhishek Nayar, who recently stepped down from his role as assistant coach of the Indian men’s team, praised Lanning’s leadership qualities.

“Meg brings a rare combination of experience, clarity, and calmness that sets her apart as a leader,” Nayar said.

  • Second phase: Vadodara from January 19 to February 5

Lanning will lead UP Warriorz in their quest to reach the playoffs for the first time in the franchise’s three-year history.
