Jay Shah-led ICC's final push to resolve Bangladesh T20 World Cup row
The ICC will send a delegation to Bangladesh in the coming days for a final face-to-face meeting with the Bangladesh Cricket Board to resolve the ongoing controversy over Bangladesh’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2026 . The Bangladesh board has refused to travel to India for their group-stage matches due to security concerns, requesting that the ICC relocate their fixtures outside the country after the Mustafizur Rahman IPL controversy escalated tensions between the two nations .
ICC’s last-ditch effort to resolve the crisis
After a video conference meeting between the ICC and BCB on Tuesday failed to break the deadlock, the world cricket body decided to visit Bangladesh for direct talks before making a final decision on the matter . The BCB was represented by President Aminul Islam, Vice Presidents Shakawath Hossain and Faruque Ahmed, Director and Chairman of the Cricket Operations Committee Nazmul Abedeen, and Chief Executive Officer Nizam Uddin Chowdhury during the virtual discussions .
During that meeting, the BCB firmly stood by its position not to send the team to India, citing safety and security concerns for players, officials, and staff . The board reiterated its request for the ICC to consider relocating Bangladesh’s matches to a neutral venue, a demand that has put the tournament schedule in jeopardy.
ICC pushes back but agrees to keep talking
The ICC pointed out that the tournament itinerary has already been announced and asked the BCB to reconsider its stance, but the Bangladesh board remained unchanged in its position . Both parties agreed that discussions would continue to explore possible solutions, with the upcoming in-person meeting in Bangladesh being viewed as the final attempt to reach a resolution before the tournament begins .
The BCB has said it remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of its players while engaging constructively with the ICC, but so far there has been no indication that either side is willing to compromise significantly .
What sparked the India-Bangladesh standoff
The controversy began when the BCCI instructed Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad amid tensions over atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh . The move was seen as politically motivated, leading to outrage in Bangladesh and prompting the BCB to ban IPL broadcasts in the country. When former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal called for dialogue to resolve the issue, a BCB director called him an “Indian agent,” triggering a nationwide boycott by players and further deepening the crisis between the two boards.
Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup schedule in limbo
Bangladesh are scheduled to open their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign on February 7 against two-time champions West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata . They will then face Italy on February 9 at the same venue, followed by a clash with 2022 T20 World Cup champions England in Kolkata, before concluding their group-stage campaign against Nepal on February 17 .
With the tournament set to begin on February 7, time is running out for the ICC and BCB to find common ground . If Bangladesh refuses to travel to India and the ICC does not relocate the matches, the team could face sanctions or even exclusion from the tournament, creating a major crisis for the world body under new ICC Chairman Jay Shah’s leadership.
