Gill, Muscle Spasm and a Team in Trouble: GT's Latest Injury Update
Gujarat Titans have confirmed that Shubman Gill’s IPL 2026 absence is not expected to be a long one — but after their second defeat in two matches, every day without their captain feels like a week too long.
What Happened and Why He Missed the RR Match
Gill developed a muscle spasm in his neck a couple of days before the Rajasthan Royals clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and was ruled out at the toss. He had been at the training sessions the day before but could not make himself available in time for the match.
The neck issue is not a new one. Gill suffered a neck sprain during the India vs South Africa Test series in November 2025, which ruled him out of the second Test and the subsequent ODI series. When the current spasm flared up, the management played it safe rather than risk aggravating a recurring problem.
Rashid Khan confirmed the development at the toss.
> “Gill has a muscle spasm. Hopefully, he will be back soon.”
Parthiv Patel: “Doesn’t Look That Serious”
GT’s assistant coach Parthiv Patel, speaking during the match broadcast, was calm about the situation and pointed to the April 8 fixture against Delhi Capitals as the target return date.
“Obviously, he had a neck sprain before, and he had a spasm a couple of days back. We are hoping he’s fit for the upcoming game. It doesn’t look that serious. Injury management is not my forte, but I can definitely tell you that he should be fine.”
GT have three days between the RR and DC matches — enough time for a muscle spasm of this nature to settle, especially with the BCCI medical team monitoring the situation.
Kumar Kushagra Steps In, Makes His Debut
In Gill’s absence, the GT management turned to a name they have been excited about for some time — wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra, who made his IPL debut on Saturday. The young batter had impressed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with a strike rate above 160 and an average above 60, and was seen as one of GT’s brightest backup options heading into the season.
Gill’s Value to GT Cannot Be Overstated
Without Gill, GT have now lost both their IPL 2026 matches — against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur and now against Rajasthan Royals in their home ground. Rashid Khan led admirably in his absence, and Sai Sudharsan’s 73 showed that GT have genuine batting quality further down, but Gill is central to everything the team does.
Since 2023, only Virat Kohli has scored more IPL runs than Gill. His presence at the top of the order doesn’t just add runs — it sets the tempo of the entire innings. Batting coach Matthew Hayden summed up what Gill brings to any team he plays for.
“Shubman is a very clear thinker of the game. He brings a lot of confidence, a bit of swagger of the modern generation, which I really enjoy — that feeling that he’s in control and shaping his own destiny. He very unselfishly says it’s very team-oriented.”
GT will be desperately hoping he is back for April 8 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. If he is, it changes the entire complexion of their campaign. If he is not, they face the very real prospect of having zero wins from their first three matches.
