Duan Jansen produced a devastating spell of left-arm seam bowling to steer Joburg Super Kings to a historic 22-run victory over Pretoria Capitals at Centurion, marking their first-ever win at their Highveld rivals’ fortress in four seasons of the SA20. Jansen’s career-best T20 figures of 4/23 ripped through the Capitals’ middle order and earned him a landslide Player of the Match award with 83.2% of the fan vote.

Jansen dismantles Capitals’ chase

Chasing 169 to win, the Pretoria Capitals made a confident start as openers Will Smeed (34 off 30) and Bryce Parsons (41 off 30) put on a solid 71-run opening stand. The hosts cruised to 86/2 in the 12th over, appearing well on course for victory.

However, the introduction of Janco Smit (1/37) triggered a dramatic collapse. Smit dismissed Dewald Brevis, silencing the home crowd and spoiling the young batter’s homecoming. From that moment, the Capitals lost five wickets for just 28 runs, with Jansen leading the destruction.

The lanky left-armer had already dismissed West Indian Shai Hope in his first spell before returning to claim the crucial wicket of Bryce Parsons (41). He then clean bowled both Connor Esterhuizen and Daniel Smith in quick succession, effectively ending the Capitals’ resistance and sealing the Super Kings’ historic triumph.

Super Kings post competitive 168/6

Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bowl under sunny Centurion skies, the Capitals made early inroads. English import Tymal Mills struck immediately, hitting Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis with a rising delivery on the wrist.

The Super Kings slumped to 16/2, losing both openers du Plessis and Matt de Villiers cheaply. However, experienced campaigners Rilee Rossouw (48 off 33) and Wiaan Mulder (43 off 28) steadied the innings with a crucial 78-run partnership off just 54 balls for the third wicket.

Though Mills returned to dismiss Rossouw, the foundation had been laid. Akeal Hosein (22 not out off 10) and Dian Forrester (10 not out off 7) provided the late flourish, pushing the visitors to a competitive 168/6.

Historic first win at Centurion

The victory was especially significant for the Joburg Super Kings, who had never managed to win at Centurion in the previous three SA20 seasons. Jansen’s match-winning spell ensured they broke that hoodoo in emphatic fashion, with the bowler thoroughly dominating the Player of the Match vote alongside fellow nominees Tymal Mills, Wiaan Mulder, and Bryce Parsons.

The win sets the tone for the Super Kings’ SA20 Season 4 campaign and underlines the value of having a quality left-arm seamer capable of swinging matches in the middle overs.
