Delhi Capitals begin WPL 2026 preparations with pre-season training camp in Goa
Delhi Capitals have kicked off their preparations for the fourth edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) with a rigorous pre-season training camp in Goa. The franchise, which has reached the finals three times in the tournament’s short history, is aiming to go one step further and claim their maiden title this season, starting with an opening clash against two-time champions Mumbai Indians on January 10 in Navi Mumbai.
Kapp, Lee lead early arrivals at Goa camp
Among the first players to arrive at the camp were veteran South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp and explosive wicketkeeper-batter Lizelle Lee, who was instrumental in Hobart Hurricanes’ recent Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) victory. They were joined by Taniyaa Bhatia, Lucy Hamilton, and several Indian players including Niki Prasad, Minnu Mani, Mamatha Madiwala, Deeya Yadav, and Nandini Sharma.
The team is training under the watchful eye of head coach Jonathan Batty, with other Indian national team players expected to join after the T20I series against Sri Lanka concludes on Tuesday.
Jonathan Batty: “Great to blend fresh faces with our philosophy”
Speaking about the pre-season camp, Batty expressed excitement about integrating new players into Delhi Capitals’ playing style and philosophy.
“It’s been great to get the squad together and start working on our plans for the season. We have some fresh faces in the team, so it will be exciting to see them blend with our philosophy. Goa’s weather is perfect for preparations. The remaining players will join in a couple of days, and we’ll begin training in full swing with the complete squad before heading to Mumbai to start our season and take it match by match toward our objectives,” Batty said.
Sunil Gupta: “Players love coming back—it’s like a family”
Sunil Gupta, the franchise’s CEO, highlighted the strong team culture at Delhi Capitals and the importance of the pre-season camp in building chemistry, especially with new additions to the squad.
“From a franchise perspective, players love coming back to Delhi Capitals—it’s like a family. The pre-season camp is where the fun and serious work begins. It’s a great opportunity for players to bond, especially with new faces in the squad, and Goa is one of the best locations to set the tone. Our consistency over the past seasons has helped us reach three consecutive finals, and the aim is to continue that momentum this year. We warmly welcome the new members of the team and look forward to having the full squad together to get our preparations in full swing,” Gupta said.
Delhi Capitals eye maiden WPL title
Delhi Capitals have been one of the most consistent teams in the WPL, reaching the finals in all three editions so far. However, they have yet to cross the final hurdle and claim the trophy. With a blend of experienced stars like Kapp and Lee, emerging Indian talent, and a strong team culture, DC will be determined to convert their consistency into silverware this season.
Their campaign begins on January 10 against Mumbai Indians in Navi Mumbai—a high-stakes opener against the defending champions that will set the tone for their title quest.
