CSK Sign Spencer Johnson as Ellis Cover — But It's Far From a Like-for-Like Replacement
Chennai Super Kings have had to patch a significant hole in their bowling attack before IPL 2026 even begins, and the man they have turned to is Spencer Johnson — a left-arm pacer who himself is returning from injury and had just pulled out of the PSL.
How CSK Landed Here
Nathan Ellis was supposed to be one of CSK’s key pace weapons this season. The Australian right-armer had been retained for ₹2 crore ahead of the 2026 auction after four seasons with Punjab Kings, and CSK had been counting on him heavily in the death overs — especially after letting go of Matheesha Pathirana, who now plays for Kolkata Knight Riders.
Ellis aggravated an old hamstring injury during the domestic One-Day Cup final on March 11. CSK confirmed he would need a minimum of three months of rehabilitation before he could bowl in match conditions again — effectively ruling him out of the entire IPL 2026 season.
Enter Spencer Johnson
With Ellis out for the season, CSK needed a left-arm death specialist quickly, and Spencer Johnson fitted the profile. Johnson had signed for Quetta Gladiators in PSL 2026 as a Platinum category pick, but pulled out citing personal reasons on March 15 — right around the time CSK were looking for an Ellis replacement. The Gladiators moved on, signing Alzarri Joseph as their replacement.
The IPL officially confirmed the signing.
“Chennai Super Kings have picked a player replacement for injured Nathan Ellis for the upcoming TATA Indian Premier League (IPL). Spencer Johnson will join CSK for INR 1.5 Crore as a replacement for Ellis.”
Who Is Spencer Johnson?
The 28-year-old left-arm pacer burst onto the scene with Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024, where he played five matches and took four wickets at an economy of 9.4. He then moved to Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025, but played just four games, picking up one wicket.
Internationally, Johnson has played 5 ODIs and 8 T20Is for Australia, picking up 18 wickets across formats. However, ESPN noted that he has not played top-flight cricket since IPL 2025, having suffered a back injury — meaning he arrives at CSK still working his way back to full fitness. There are reports he may miss CSK’s opening games as well.
A Tough Task to Fill Ellis’s Shoes
Ellis is not an easy player to replace. Across 17 IPL matches, he has taken 19 wickets and was known for his ability to take the ball up front and at the death. Johnson, despite his raw ability as a left-arm yorker specialist, is coming in without match practice and with an injury history of his own.
CSK’s pace attack for IPL 2026 is looking thin heading into the season. Their schedule opens on March 30 against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, followed by Punjab Kings at home on April 3 and Delhi Capitals on April 11 at Chepauk.
Last season, CSK finished last in IPL 2025, winning just four out of 14 matches and being eliminated first from the playoff race. A fresh start was the aim — but losing Nathan Ellis before the first ball is bowled has made that task considerably harder.
